Jesse Meade is a 28 year old singer-songwriter now living in Eugene, Oregon. He accompanies himself with his own finger-style, acoustic guitar playing while performing both original material and an array of cover songs. His influences include musicians like: Ray Charles, Hank Williams, Chuck Willis, Elizabeth Cotten, Otis Redding, Jimmie Rodgers, Aretha Franklin, Percy Mayfield, John Hurt, Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline, Fats Domino, and Dinah Washington. Currently he is performing all over the Northwest while also writing and recording new music and will be live at the Fort George Brewery and Public House on Sunday, January 17th at 8pm. There is no cover charge.

2010 Mug Club filling fast




The 2010 Mug Club sales kicked off on Tuesday, December 1. 25 new mug numbers were available for sale and sold out that same day. On January 1, 2010, at 11:00 AM all mugs not renewed went up for sale to the general public.The price for the mugs are $85.00, and enables mug holders to get a 21.5 oz beer for the price of a pint, as well as be eligible to win in the monthly t-shirt drawing. The glass mugs have been imported from Germany this year, and each one is engraved with the Fort George logo and the mug holder's number.

Black-eyed Peas bring good luck for 2010

Happy New Years everyone! Here is a very tasty way to bring in the New Year. Aside from soothing the stomach from the beers consumed from the evening before, its has been a long-standing tradition to eat a bowl of black-eyed peas, also known as the cow pea, to bring luck for the year to come.

During the time of the civil war Union troops, led by General William T. Sherman, looted and destroyed all food supplies they could in the south. At the time the black-eyed pea was only considered suitable for raising livestock so it was left alone.

As the beans cook they swell and represent prosperity, combine that with a little cured pork product and you have your self a prosperous and tasty bowl of beans.

The following recipe is pretty basic. You can fill it out with the addition of collard greens, hot sauce and corn bread.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 pounds fresh black-eyed peas, rinsed, drained

8 to 12 ounces bacon, diced

1 1/2 cups chopped onion

1 cup chopped red and green bell pepper

1/2 cup chopped celery

1 clove garlic, minced

1 1/2 cups water

1 can (approx. 14.5 ounces) fire-roasted diced tomatoes, or chili-seasoned tomatoes

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon dried leaf oregano

Preparation:

1. Put rinsed fresh black-eyed peas in a 4 to 6-quart slow cooker.
2. Cook bacon in a large skillet until softened; add onions, peppers, and celery and continue cooking, stirring frequently, until vegetables are tender. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute longer
3. Add the vegetable mixture to the slow cooker along with the water. Cover and cook on low for 5 to 7 hours, or until peas are tender. Add remaining ingredients and continue cooking for 1 to 2 hours longer.


February 1st marks the beginning of Stout Month at the Fort George Brewery in Astoria, OR. At least 8 stouts will be featured this year, including Badda Bing, a flanders-style sour cherry stout; The Murky Pearl, brewed with Willapa Bay oysters; Bourbon Barrel-aged Cavatica Stout; Spank Stout, brewed with 3 varieties of hot pepper; and the ever-popular Coffee Girl Stout, made with espresso. Several guest stouts will also be on tap, including The Abyss from Deschutes Brewery. A flight of all the stouts is available for a blind tasting, and commemorative Stout Month t-shirts will be for sale.
The annual "Stout & Oysters" Brewer's Dinner will take place on February 10th, featuring 5 courses of mouth-watering oysters paired with selected stouts. Tickets for the Brewer's Dinner are $55, or $100 for two.

Pan and the GD's

Pan and the GD's are an alternative americana group whose music can be described as 'sophisticated hobo music' or 'adventure music.' They are an uncompromising group of individuals who produce accessible scenes of sound. They run the gambit, turning styles in and out like skateboarders turn tricks. Michael Pan is the band's songwriter and leader who claims that "writing songs is like rolling a smoke in the back of a pickup, you have to do whatever is necessary to accomplish the mission." Other members include drummer Matt Farina who is solid, inventive and plays with a bullwhip precision. Bassist Chris Petryszak holds down the bottom like gravity. He has been called a theater jam man and is known to have partied in hotel rooms with the Dixie Chicks. Unlike most americana acts that only follow a country/blues feel, Pan and the GD's don't forget that jazz is a huge part of what it means to be American. Families are welcome and the music is free. It starts at 8pm.
